Cat Behavior
Everyday life
- Naps
- Cats walk to the coziest spot nearby (see the table below) and stretch out for a nap — more often at night.
- Kneading
- Before lying down on something soft (wool, carpet, a bed), they knead with their paws and purr.
- Stretch and yawn
- After a full nap they stretch and yawn.
- Breathing and twitching
- Sleeping cats breathe slowly, and now and then a paw or the tail twitches.
- Loafing
- They tuck their paws in at a cozy spot and look around.
- Scratching
- They scratch logs or wool nearby (or a wall).
- Rolling over
- They roll on their backs and wiggle their paws.
- Grooming
- They sit, lick a paw and wash their face.
- Play-fighting
- Bored cats pounce on each other. Sometimes two grown cats or two kittens squabble, but nobody gets hurt.
- Grooming each other
- A cat licks a friend's head and neck; the other tips its head up and purrs, and two grown cats may take turns. Grown cats wash kittens first, like a mother cat.
- Nose boops
- Cats that have been apart for a while touch noses when they meet again.
- Tail play
- A kitten sneaks behind a grown cat and pounces at its swishing tail; the grown cat stands patiently and swishes it for them.
- Cuddling up
- A cat looking for a nap likes to lie down right next to a cat that is already resting.
- Tag
- Cats chase each other, swapping roles when one catches the other. Kittens play it a lot, grown cats now and then.
- Kittens
- Kittens follow grown cats around.
- Shaking dry
- After a swim or the rain, they shake themselves dry once they're on dry ground.
With their owner
- Greeting
- Come back after 5 minutes away and they trot up to you, tail high.
- Rubbing
- Stand still nearby and they circle your legs, rubbing against you.
- Head tilt
- Stand and look at a cat and it tilts its head at you.
- Answering to their name
- Say a cat's name (from a name tag) in chat and it meows, turns and runs to you.
- Looking up
- While you have its inventory open, the cat sits and looks up at you. Change its clothes and it shakes when you close it.
- Begging
- Hold a fish and hungry cats come closer and meow for it.
- Proud
- Morning gifts after sleeping together are dropped on the ground with a proud pose.
Reacting to what you hold
- String or a feather (a cat toy)
- Cats creep up, wiggle and pounce.
- Redstone torch (a laser pointer)
- A red dot appears where you look, and cats chase it.
- Milk bucket
- Cats come and meow up at you for it.
- Grass or ferns
- Cats stretch their necks and sniff.
- Rotten flesh
- One sniff and they run away.
- Water bucket, or a carved pumpkin on your head
- Cats back away, and dash off if you get too close.
- Brush
- Right-click your cat to brush it: it purrs and drops a hairball (string).
- Loud noises
- Explosions, bells and lightning startle cats: they cower or run around.
Coziness
For naps and loafing, cats pick the spot with the highest total:
| On something soft (bed, wool, carpet, hay, moss) | +4 |
| On a lit furnace, smoker or blast furnace | +4 |
| Near a lit campfire or furnace (within 2 blocks) | +3 |
| In the sun during the day | +2 |
| Indoors at night | +1 |
| Right next to a resting cat | +3 |
Every cat is different
- Cats are 0.5–1.5 times the vanilla size; bigger cats have deeper voices
- Builds: normal, chubby (8%) or fat (3%). Chubbier cats walk slower
- Kittens inherit size and build from their parents
Stray cats
- Strays are shy, but come closer for fish
